Smart Pallets operates from 3 sites, covering all areas of Melbourne. Our sites are located in Brooklyn, Epping and Dandenong South. Our main 35-acre site in Dandenong South was originally a sand quarry and landfill site. From the late 1990’s the site was progressively transformed into a State-of-the-Art recycling facility, specializing in timber waste and pallet recycling.
All three sites repair and recycle timber pallets, but the Dandenong South site also conducts mulching and recycling activities. We produce landscaping mulch, animal bedding, lane-way mulch for dairy farms, agricultural mulch for stockyards, boiler fuel and wood fibre for particle board manufacturing. We also produce boiler fuel for our own bioenergy plant, which creates heat for our heat-treatment and drying kilns. They are the only bioenergy powered kilns of their kind in Australia.
Our business is an example of circularity. Nothing is wasted in the timber waste we process or pallet recycling activities we conduct. Our primary aim is to re-use items such as pallets, crate and boxes in their original state. We repair, modify, re-heat treat , paint….do whatever is necessary to make these items suitable for re-use. We also collect pallets all over Victoria for customers who want their pallets back. We call this our “Collect, Repair, Return” service. This service alone currently re-uses over a quarter of a million pallets per annum! Pallets that would otherwise have ended up in skip bins on building sites. If ewe can re-use a pallet because it is the wrong size, or is too badly damaged, we salvage what re-usable timber there is and use these recycled components to repair or remanufacture pallets, crates or boxes. All of our offcuts and other waste timber, not suitable for reuse is recycled into mulch products. Even the nails and screws are recycled as well pull them out with magnets!
